🀎Maya Angelou was an American poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist who was known for her powerful writing and speeches. She was the first black woman to have a screenplay produced, for the film "Georgia, Georgia" in 1972. ❀❀

βœ… Maya Angelou was born on April 4, 1928, in St. Louis, Missouri, as Marguerite Annie Johnson.

βœ… She experienced a traumatic childhood, and did not speak for several years as a result of the trauma.

βœ… She worked as a professional dancer, singer, and actress in the 1950s and 1960s, and was part of the civil rights movement.

βœ… Angelou's best-known work is her 1969 memoir "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," which tells the story of her childhood and early adulthood.

βœ… Angelou was a professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, from 1982 until her death in 2014.

βœ… Angelou received numerous awards for her writing, including three Grammy Awards for her spoken-word albums, a National Medal of Arts, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

βœ… In addition to her writing, Angelou was a prominent civil rights activist and worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.

βœ… She wrote and recited a poem, "On the Pulse of Morning," at the inauguration of President Bill Clinton in 1993.

βœ… Maya Angelou died on May 28, 2014, at the age of 86.
