πŸ˜‡As we said goodbye to my godfather Dennis Fisher (1937-2024) this weekend I felt a PEACE knowing the LOVE that he shared with his friends and family will NEVER DIEπŸ’› I was also reminded how intertwined immigration is in black history in the US. My godparents married in 1964, the year of the CIVIL RIGHTS ACT and my godmother emigrated to the US from Guyana πŸ‡¬πŸ‡Ύin 1969 in search of better opportunities her family.

πŸ’“This love sacrifices of splitting the family was common. The move was facilitated by the passage of The Immigration and Nationality Act in 1965 which abolished quotas, opening the doors to "those who can contribute most to this country – to its growth, to its strength, to its spirit." The new law created a preference system that focused on immigrants' skills and family relations with citizens or U. S. residents.

βš–The 1965 amendments were intended to purge immigration law of its racist legacy by replacing the old quotas that favored Northern Europeans and restricted Asians and Africans, with a new system that allocated residence visas according to a neutral preference system based on family reunification and labor force needs.

❀So after 60 years of marriage, filled with ups and downs, triumphs, and challenges, the LOVE that permeated the home-going Celebration of Life inspired and reassured the LOVE NEVER dies
