Carter G Woodson
#PositivityPause for Inspiration and Encouragement.
As I strolled down Rhode Island Avenue in Washington DC, I came upon the statue of Carter G Woodson, the father of African-American History, and I could not resist the opportunity to thank him for the amazing legacy and gift of knowledge that he left for generations to come.
✅He was born in New Canton, Virginia to former slaves on Dec 19th, 1875 and died in 1950.
✅He started high school at age 20 because he had to work to help his family but completed it in 2 years.
✅He was the second African-American to earn a doctorate in history from Harvard in 1912.
✅In 1926, he started the lasting celebration and remembrance of black history during February.
✅Woodson felt African-American history had been neglected and misrepresented in academia and wrote multiple books on African-American history, the most famous of which is “The Mis-Education of the Negro”.
✅He believed racism could be overcome through education.
