πͺ "Standing on Shoulders" π
π Many of us are where we are because someone paved the way and provided shoulders for us to climb onto. As I operate today, I can’t help but reflect on what it took for me to get hereππΎ Celebrating Women’s History Month is a great reminder to give thanks for the trailblazers that went before usπΊπ
π©β Today, we honor the extraordinary legacy of Elisabeth Pauline Pickett, the first female board-certified urologist in 1962. Her journey was marked by unparalleled dedication and resilience, making her a true trailblazer in the medical field.
π Born in the early 20th century, Dr. Pickett faced immense challenges and discrimination during her medical education. Due to a shortage of physicians in WWII, she attended medical school straight through summers, graduating in three years. Her residency at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn from 1944-46 demanded 72-hour shifts.
πΊ Dr. Pickett's impact wasn't just in medicine; she pioneered gender equality in the workplace. Some places where she trained had to build makeshift women’s bathrooms, a testament to her groundbreaking journey.
π₯ Holding academic positions at prestigious institutions and training Afghan physicians, Dr. Pickett's influence extended globally. Her resilience and commitment to healing inspire us to reach new heights.
βΈ Today's PAUSE is a profound moment to reflect on whose shoulders you stand and feel the gratitude for that person’s hard work and sacrifice . Reflect on how you can be a shoulder for someone elseπ and feel the joy that comes with the sense of purpose attached to making a difference in someone else’s lifeπ
